Planned obsolescence. The bundled Blu-ray software (PowerDVD 10) says it needs to be updated. I update it. Says I need to buy the new version for ~$50.

That's going to be a big bag of nope. Looking into the 3-4 year old forum posts, the software company (CyberLink) and the hardware support team (Lenovo) bounced people around from one to the other, saying the other should fix it. And the 'patches' and 'updates' that are suggested just break it further. Damn, I want the Y410p or a Y50.

I've *heard* that you can just rip and compress Blu-ray discs if you're having trouble with PowerDVD/Nero/etc.

I gave up on PowerDVD after running into the exact problem you describe. Oh, I need to spend $50 to get a version that's compatible with Windows 8? No thanks. I bought a copy of Nero and used that for a while, but eventually got tired of the inconveniences trying to watch movies that I'd already bought.

I didn't think anyone used bloatware anymore.

The roommate bought a Blu-Ray player for his new computer. It required software to play Blu-Rays. This software cost money.

So, yo ho ho and shiver me timbers, he found it for free online. Yarr, sail the seven ISP's.

Could've sworn Windows played Blu Ray natively, has he tried?
